I saw this depression era recipe on websites and Facebook videos and had been curious for a while. I really like vinegar, buttermilk, and chess pies, and this seems like it will have a similar texture although nothing tangy in it.
I requested this as a birthday dessert in 2023 but no dice. Amy did eventually buy me a pie crust at the store. It took me a long while to get around to making it. The preparation is about as easy as something could be. I guess a store bought pie crust and canned pie filling is easier, but this is right there.
I’m hopeful that it’s good. It bakes for an hour and then needs to cool and totally refrigerate. If it sets well I think I’d like to try this with a root beer instead of water. Or a Big Red would be fun and weird. It may be gross and this is end of the experiment.
I got the recipe that I used today here. I looked at a few and they were all pretty similar. Southern Living adds 1.5 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar and .5 tsp salt and one extra Tbsp of butter
